Okay, well maybe just a little … at the beginning. Once healthy living becomes a lifestyle, it becomes the new normal.
Today’s Fit Tips are all about how to take the suck out of lifestyle changes.
Start will small, easy changes
You don’t have to revamp your entire life in one day to start feeling/seeing results. Start, instead, with little things that you know you can be successful at doing. If you know that you can completely remove pop out of your diet, start with that and then pat yourself on the back when you are successful (longer than one day or one week, just saying). Then move to the next small thing. For example, reducing the amount of pasta from your weekly intake, removing processed meats from your diet, or increasing the amount of water you drink everyday.
Learn to love yourself first
Many women I have worked with over the years have a negative relationship with themselves and their bodies. They’re at the studio/gym to punish themselves for eating yesterday and because they don’t look like that fitness model they just saw in the latest fitness magazine. What I have learned from working them, in addition to my own personal journey, is that if you’re not happy with how you look and feel right now – you probably won’t feel much better in 6 months. Our perception of ourselves is a mental image/feeling … not a physical one. Once you lose the weight, you’re still going to have the same insecurities and will still see the flaws. And really, aren’t you all kinds of awesome???
Be reasonable and balanced
This last point kind of ties the previous two together. Understand that you’re making changes to the way you do things. It’s going to be challenging sometimes and sometimes you’re not going to be happy with your progress and/or that last meal you ate. It’s okay!!!! You’re a human being who has been eating processed and unhealthy food for a very long time. It’s going to be hard to resist sometimes. And who said you have to give up everything completely?? Your mind is great at throwing temper-tantrums when it feels like it’s being denied. Don’t deny yourself those simple little celebrations, social occasions, and treats that you look forward to and enjoy. Being fit and living a healthy lifestyle isn’t about being grumpy cause you’re hungry or left out. Remind yourself why you are making changes and then focus on taking small steps everyday towards your goal! Happy, healthy living isn’t about extremes & total denial isn’t always the answer (unless there are health concerns of course). And remember, there are always ways to tweak your eating habits that can and will satiate your palate and your brain.
